about

Sonata for Violin and Piano was completed in the spring of 2004, and is cast in three movements totaling about twelve minutes. Violinist Joanna Kurkowicz and I played the premiere performance at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I dedicated the work to my friend James Bohn, whose interest in my music was encouraging to me during that time. Even though I settled into a sonata form for the first movement, I utilized musical fragments, unpredictably and constantly changing, revolving around each other not unlike a dream in which the characters are unhinged from reality and nevertheless interacting convincingly. Such was also the case for the slower second movement, although I strove to construct longer lines out of the fragments. The energetic finale evolves into dance music at several points.
