about

This is free as it is a MIDI realization of an as-of-yet-unperformed orchestral work. The instrumentation is 2(picc.)2(hen)2(bscl)2, 2231, timp, 2 prc, strings.

Advanced Anxieties was written at my home in Pennsylvania in the summer of 2012 and lasts about 11 minutes. The title comes from a line in David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest in which one character, upon hearing that another is now more worried about Quebecois separatism than cockroaches, commends him for moving on to the more advanced anxieties. I have written a scherzo in a fantasy-variation form – the rising adrenaline of the initial gesture announces agitated music and returns in many forms, always proceeding to strange and often humorous resolutions.

Performance History and Further information:

I wrote Advanced Anxieties without a commission or performance in mind. There are so many calls for orchestra scores that I felt “you can’t win if you don’t play”, and I put pen to paper. While still without a performance (as of early 2012) I cannot say that I wasted my time, as no one else was clamoring for a piece at that time, and it really did not take that long to write. For conductors and musical directors reading this: you could premiere this work, and you would save a heap of money on commissioning a new work, plus, you know what you are getting ahead of time and that the piece will be presented to you on time. Wouldn’t that be nice?
