about

Sinfonietta is a four-movement work (as one track here) for 20 piece wind ensemble. It wrote it in Framingham, Massachusetts and Cavendish, Vermont, completing it in the first weeks of 1997. Neal Hampton and the Brandeis University Wind Ensemble gave the first performance later that spring. They were an intermediate level group; I wanted to write something more chromatic than these players were used to, yet with familiar forms. The first movement, “Capriccioso” is a sonata form, with spry and hocket-like music for themes. The slower and lyrical “Arioso” is a series of short, overlapping melodies. The “Scherzo” is a lurching minuet with a brass section trio, and the finale, “Maestoso” is a rondo form with many solo passages in its interludes and a train-wreck ending. This performance is by the Wayne State University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Douglas Bianchi, at WSU in November of 2001.
