about

Marimba Quartet was completed in March 2002 at my home in Natick, Massachusetts. Marimbist Ryan Loud gave the premiere with vioilinist Biliana Voutchkova, violist Mark Berger and 'cellist Ivan Lalev in May of ’06. It is cast in a single movement and lasts about 16 minutes. The opening section contains the seeds of development for the entire work: a rhythmic pattern in 17, and parabolic arpeggiations interspersed with homophonic punctuations. Perhaps the most rhythmically driven piece I’ve written since youth, I return to the vigorous opening material in rondo-like fashion -- each iteration spins out a new episode.
